Ngorongoro: "Discovering the Wonders of the World"

The high plains of Ngorongoro Conservation Area are best known for its impressive crater, also known as Africa's Garden of Eden or the Eighth Wonder of the World. Surrounded by a 600-metre high crater wall, here you will find the world's largest uninterrupted caldera. As well as the spectacular views, there is a huge density of wildlife, with an estimated 30,000 wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, gazelle, lion, hyena, jackal, cheetah and leopard roaming the green grassy plains at the bottom of the crater. Due to the permanent presence of some sixteen rhinos, it is by far the best place in Tanzania to spot the big 5 within a few hours.

But there is much more than just the crater. The high plains of Ngorongoro comprise a number of spectacular peaks up to 3650 metres high and the Olmoti & Empakai craters. You will encounter Masaai everywhere, who practice extensive cattle breeding and live in harmony with predators and prey animals. Do you want to get away from the crowds? Then consider a day trip to Empakai, a night in the remote and spectacular 'The Highlands' lodge, or leave your car and set off on a trek of several days led by Masaai guides.

To the West, the high plains of Ngorongoro turn into the endless grassy plains of the Serengeti. We are particularly fond of the forested Ndutu, right on the border with Serengeti NP. It's the place to be in January & February, when the 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra from the migration come here to calve on a best of range for a few weeks. Not for nothing is this the favourite spot of many a National Geographic photographer.

There are numerous lodges in the Ngorongoro area. Some lodges have a view of the crater, some are located just outside Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the highlands of Karatu.

Serengeti

Serengeti stands for endless plains. On these grassy plains, with an area larger than Flanders, you will not only find the 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra that make up the migration. There are also unrivalled numbers of lions, leopards and cheetahs.

Lake Natron: "Leaving the beaten track"

Lake Natron: "Leaving the beaten track". Far from the crowds, in a seemingly uninhabitable area, you will find the splendour of Lake Natron & the sacred mountain of the Masaai: Ol Donyo Lengai. It is difficult to describe in words why a visit to this region is for so many people the highlight of a trip to Tanzania.
